Plaster Repair or New Application
When it comes to new plaster or plaster repair, Hawthorne Construction and Painting has over 15 years of experience. It is found on the interior, usually of older homes, first being widely used in the 1800s. Even though it is usually in vintage houses, plaster can be used in modern homes depending on the finished look that is desired.
An old style plaster wall is installed with three coats of troweled material over a substrate. Plaster requires a lot more skill than drywall, not to mention a lot more work. When the plaster dries the coats bond together into one monolithic wall or ceiling. How difficult it is to repair plaster is determined by how stable the plaster is now.
Small repairs can be done with drywall compound and drywall tape. It is even possible to use pieces of drywall to make larger repairs. Plaster is a gypsum based product, the same as drywall, so the two materials are compatible.
Plaster is not Stucco
Plaster is a building material used for the protective and/or decorative coating of walls and ceilings and for moulding and casting decorative elements. Another imprecise term used for the material is stucco, which is also often used for plasterwork that is worked in some way to produce relief decoration, rather than flat surfaces.
The most common types of plaster mainly contain either gypsum, lime, or cement, but all work in a similar way. The plaster is manufactured as a dry powder and is mixed with water to form a stiff but workable paste immediately before it is applied to the surface. The reaction with water liberates heat through crystallization and the hydrated plaster then hardens.
Plaster color can be left white, painted over or tinted. The finish can be smooth or textured
Plastering is 2-3 step process for repair or new construction. The finished product is paintable or color can be added directly into the texture. Different finishes can be done, depending on your plasterer’s experience. Usually it is finished smooth, but different designs can be done such as crow’s foot, veneer, textured or a sand finish.
